Release notes for OpenTV Suite

These release notes are divided into two sections, together covering the end-to-end solution:

OpenTV Video Platform

Release summary

This release includes the CIM-GO component, allowing operators that use Gracenote to deliver new content channel via a GN API key. We have also added support for pushing/publishing LTCU assets extracted/generated at AWS MediaPackage assets to Lumen CDN, and serve them from there.

We are also bringing several improvements to the Image Service functionality.

Image Service enhancements

Image Service functionality has been improved.

Images are key to driving user interaction with the client – if you show the correct image then the users will consume more.

AWS Elemental MediaPackage integration with third-party CDN

The Live-to-VOD assets or LTCU assets extracted/generated at AWS MediaPackage are directly served from origin/S3 bucket as of today.

This feature enables pushing/publishing that asset to Lumen CDN and serve it from the CDN.

Enable CIM-GO to deliver new content channel

Content delivered from Gracenote via the CIM-GO component is controlled by the GN API key.

There will be occasions when the content delivered via this API key changes (via contractual discussions between GN and the end-customer).

CIM-GO caters for such changes in content such that the impacts on NAGRA downstream systems are known and impacts are automated as much as possible.

Content discovery enhancement – filter by device type

A client can now request only those events that are playable on the device, so that it limits the amount of data returned and doesn't require client side filtering. This allows for quicker processing of guide data to be shown to the end user.

Guest entitlements

The STD2 release includes the guest entitlements feature, which allows a subscriber to invite a number of guests to a watch party, where channel entitlements are temporarily provided to guests (non-subscribed customers) to watch specific events.

Rework Guide on Smart TV Devices (LG Web OS and Samsung Tizen) to be more performant.
Introduce Android Channels API integration into OpenTV Launcher devices – content from installed third party apps can now be included in the OpenTV Launcher Rails for apps that publish content to the Android Channels API.
Override event posters – content posters can be overridden using attributes in Rails Builder to select the desired poster.
Recent screen performance improvement – improve the time to select the channel item in recent channel list so that tuning to channel is faster.
Enable dynamic updates of Tizen apps.
Enable dynamic updates of WebOS apps.
Adjustments for caching data for all devices.
Support showing "DISCOVER" screen as initial view on sign-in, reboot, and standby/wakeup scenarios instead of live video on TV devices. However, there are some limitations to this feature on LG, Tizen wherein devices put application to background and then bring to foreground on standby on-off . The ION product behavior on BG/FG case is to retain the previous application state as it is. Hence in standby case, launching default screen as discover OR default channel behaviour is not supported.
Updated OpenTV Launcher notifications to meet Google certification requirements.
Enable user to change to live channels using CH+/- while watching recorded content.
Enable additional application logging remotely.

The features included as part of this release are:

ION Performance Benchmark outcome (NPVR) – optimized UI rendering, loading time on SAVED screen for all TV devices. Optimised management of recording data stored in ION and API calls to reduce the memory usage and network load.
ION Performance Benchmark outcome (menu navigation) – optimised menu navigation on all TV devices. This feature allows the user to navigate between menu items without blocking.
Performance optimisation of playback from Media Card / Discover / Live / Guide – improved time to playback from Media Card on Smart TV devices as per KPI definitions mentioned in ION KPIs. Some of the improvements were also applied to Android TV devices and ensured the KPIs are achieved on Android TV devices as well.
UI performance improvement for the various screens – improved time to load and interact with ION main menu screens on all TV devices as per the KPI definitions mentioned in ION KPIs.
Performance improvement on the time taken to playback during the stand-by / wake-up in SmartTV devices – the time taken to start playback when the user wakes up the box from standby must be less than 18 seconds. Refer to ION KPIs for any deviations.

ION Q2 release, 23.33.020 includes the following features and bug fixes.

New product features

The features included as part of this release are:

Support for Tizen 2023 TV models
Introduce support for Tizen TV models released in 2023. This brings our support for Tizen TV models from 2020 up to 2023.
SimplifiedrRecording screen
1. UEX improvements to simplify scheduling and managing single and series recording
2. Added the options to schedule and manage "All new episodes " within new UEX improvement workflow.
3. Supports confirmation popups for cancellation and deletion of recording
4. Simplified cancellation of ongoing series of recording – only cancel series of recording is allowed now.
New UEX improvements
1. Replay screen can be configured to go directly to the list of channels.
2. Search keyboard can now be configured to show on text box entry or not.
3. Introduce pinch to zoom on mobile devices whose screens are not 16:9.
Support for iOS 17 ( iPhone/iPad)
Support for Android 13 (mobile/tablet) – allow upload of Android apps that work with Android 13 (target API level 33)
Support for Samsung hospitality TVs – pupporting SignOn by device identifier to mitigate the logout that occurs on hospitality devices on setting the device to standby.
